Sloth Receives Wellness Exam!
On July 26, “Flan,” a three-year-old Linne's two-toed sloth, received a wellness exam as part of Zoo Miami’s preventative health
program. In addition to an overall assessment of body condition, including an eye and dental exam, he received vaccinations,
X-rays, an ultrasound exam and blood collection. The procedure was directed by Zoo Miami Associate Veterinarian, Dr. Rodney
Schnellbacher, assisted by members of the Animal Health and Animal Science teams. Initial assessments indicate that Flan is in
good health and he has since been returned to his habitat to quietly recover from the sedation that was administered for the exam!

One of the in-situ conservation projects managed through Zoo Miami’s Conservation and Research Department is the Gopher Tortoise
Ecology Program, led by conservation biologist, Dr. Steven Whitfield. On July 23, Dr. Whitfield joined personnel from the
Miami-Dade County Environmentally Endangered Lands Program (EEL), Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC), and our own Animal
Health Team, to release two tortoises that had been successfully rehabilitated at Zoo Miami! The individuals were marked and
fitted with transmitters so that they could be monitored in the future and hopefully provide more valuable information about this
unique native species.
