Highlights from Runway's AI Film Festival, GEN:48

After a series of intriguing promo videos, a selection of 65 finalists, and a tally of 10,000 votes, AI video company Runway has announced the winner of its first AI short film competition, GEN:48.

For those unfamiliar, GEN:48 is a short film competition where filmmakers are given just 48 hours to conceptualize and produce a 1-4 minute film using Runway’s generative AI tools.

Congratulations are in order for Dan Hammill and Jeff Wood, who took home the top prize with their strange yet entertaining film, "2026.”

Our take?

To our surprise, the festival's outcomes were quite extraordinary.

However, while the competition aimed to celebrate the intersection of tech and creativity, it did raise questions about the future of art and filmmaking in a world where generative AI tools are readily available.
