CANADIAN WRITERS STRIKE AVERTED: NEW AGREEMENT REACHED BETWEEN WGC AND CMPA
The Canadian entertainment industry can breathe a sigh of relief! The Writers Guild of Canada (WGC) and the Media Producers
Association (CMPA) have signed a three-year labour agreement, averting a potential strike.
Story Details:
* Pending ratification, the deal addresses compensation, workplace conditions, minimum writer’s room staffing requirements, and
protections against the impact of AI technology.
* The agreement covers Canadian writers, story editors, and story consultants.
* During the negotiations the WGC gained significant leverage from a near-unanimous strike vote, greatly strengthening their
position.
* Support from the Directors Guild of Canada further bolstered the union's position.
Our Take
This agreement signals a win for Canadian screenwriters and the industry. The WGC's strategic approach and strong union support
set a precedent for fair labour negotiations. It highlights Canada's growing role as a leader in equitable entertainment practices
while setting us up the industry for a smooth summer of shooting.
