Well, you know what they say…better late than never! Although it’s been over a month since my adventure came to an end, I owe, to whoever was following along, this one last post. I hope you’ve enjoyed my recounts of life on the trail and ultimately, I hope I’ve inspired at least one wandering soul out there to jump out of their comfort zone and just do the damn thing! It doesn’t have to be the Appalachian Trail (you’d have to be crazy!) but any adventure that’s been lingering in the back of your mind for years, ...

My friends, let’s talk about the trail bathroom.
It’s kind of a funny topic, and one that’s taboo in normal life, but not among hikers, so welcome to the club.
Going potty is easy, just walk off trail, take a look around and if the coast is clear go potty. It’s not foolproof, one time I walked off trail and went potty behind a large bolder only to find that the trail took a 90 degree turn and two hikers walked near me. ...

urricane Helene brought high winds and devastating flooding to much of the southeastern US last week, and Appalachian Trail towns like Hot Springs, North Carolina, Erwin, Tennessee, and Damascus, Virginia were among those hardest hit by the storm.
Members of the communities that have supported AT thru-hikers for so many years now find themselves cut off by damaged roads and without power, reliable water, and critical supplies. Many have seen their homes and businesses damaged or destroyed. ...

This morning I woke up by the water cache around 6:30am and began packing up. No one else was moving around at all, but I knew that we had to get going. We have to do about 30 miles today and are still planning on heading into town tonight. In order to make this last stretch of miles easier we decided to pop into enchantment to resupply. That breaks our resupply up in half basically. So we have to carry half as much food. ...

What’s Working, What’s Not, and What’s Changed
This past week I passed the halfway point on the Appalachian Trail! This sounds like a good time, and hopefully something that might be helpful, to check in on the gear!
Overall I would say that things have gone well gearwise. I have continued to tweak my gear along the way – get rid of this, replace that, add something, though this last one happens very infrequently as what you add you have to carry! ...

Rock N’ Roll High School
There were many, many choices for this one, obviously! Here’s some of the possible intro songs that jumped out from my musical mind.
Long Live Rock by The Who
Let There Be Rock by The Drive by Truckers
Rockaria by Electric Light Orchestra
Rockin Stroll by The Lemonheads
Rock and Roll Suicide by David Bowie
The Rock by Deer Tick
I think you get where this is going! I’m going with the Ramones and Rock N’ Roll High School however as I think they say the word ‘rock’ in one song more than any other! ...

In today’s episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined by Ian Mangiardi aka “Dusty”. For those of you who’ve read Appalachian Trials, you’re already familiar with Ian’s name, as he served as my pre AT thru-hike guru and therapist. Ian gives us a full rundown on his triple crown treks, including being dumped on two of the three hikes, how he and Andy Laub (former guest) formed an instant bromance on the first week of the AT, ...

or hikers dreaming of a new challenge traversing Texas’ vast landscapes on foot, bike, or horseback, a new long-distance trail across Texas may soon become a reality. Known as the Cross Texas Trail, or XTX, this proposed 1,500-mile route promises to showcase the diversity of the Lone Star State, from pine forests of East Texas to the rugged deserts of the West.
Spearheaded by bike advocate, former community design consultant, and state representative Charlie Gandy, this trail could place Texas on the map as a premier destination for long-distance hiking. ...
