The Healthy Gut, I've been thinking of you

 Rebecca, Coomel,

Hi the-healthy-gut,

Thanks for connecting with me at The Healthy Gut.

We’ve barely just met and I have a confession to make to you.

When I was diagnosed with SIBO I was initially relieved. Finally, I had an answer as to why I felt so bad.

But then something happened.

The relief was overcome with anxiety, confusion, and yes, a bit of fear. What on earth was I going to eat now? I was overwhelmed.

I hit up Google and spent hours researching meal ideas. I had already been on a mostly paleo diet for a while, but a lot of my favourite items were now off the list (sweet potato, store-bought coconut yoghurt, honey, butter, red wine…).

And here comes my second confession.

I got so scared of eating the wrong things, that I only ate from a really small list of foods.  It was boring for me and everyone else around me.

I was also feeling pretty down about life – it felt really unfair that I had ended up like this when I watched others around me eat burgers, fries, junk food and sweets, yet not seem to have any problems.

And even though I had a diagnosis, I still felt pretty sick for quite a while.  Every day I asked ‘Is this all there is to life?’.

One day, I gave myself a good talking to. I realised I was the only one who had the power to change things.

I changed my mindset and started being grateful for the nutritious food I could eat. I asked for support. I built a team of health and wellness specialists around me. And I returned to the kitchen and reignited my love for food.

I got busy. I started documenting every meal I cooked and photographing it. If you want to see some pretty embarrassing photos from my early days of food photography, check out my early Instagram feed here.

I also knew that I wanted to help others through their SIBO journeys but I wanted to know I was able to heal myself first. As soon as I got the all-clear, I got busy.

I realised that no one had created a SIBO-friendly cookbook yet, so I decided to create the world’s first SIBO Cookbook myself.

I am not a professional photographer or chef. I am just like you, a person who was suffering from SIBO and who wanted to eat nice food. I love cooking and I taught myself food photography and studied cookbooks to learn how to write up recipes. I am passionate about food and bringing love and happiness back into our lives, through food, when sometimes this feels impossible.

I also have a great team of experts who I now work with. They all had a part to play in supporting the development of the cookbook.

I have spoken with thousands of fellow SIBOers. I know that you are probably feeling overwhelmed and a little bit scared of food. You have felt sick for a long time and suffer from a range of symptoms every day (bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, brain fog, weight gain/loss and more). You’ve got plenty on your mind and the last thing you feel like is trying to think of how to eat your SIBO-friendly foods in interesting ways.

So why am I telling you this?  Well, that’s my third confession.

At The Healthy Gut, we stand for empowerment and innovation. We want to help ourselves be empowered to change the status quo, and to be innovative in how we do it.

If something doesn’t work for us, we’re going to keep looking for ways until it does. We allow ourselves to make mistakes, because from them we learn. We will share our successes and our failures with you. So be kind to yourself and don’t get angry if you make a mistake.

Unlike other health programs, we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.  Your body, and gut, is completely unique to you. You know your body better than anybody else.

So take what we share with you and be empowered to do it on your terms. There is no right or wrong here. We won’t be dogmatic in our approach and hope you won’t be too.

I can’t do this on my own. That’s why I would love to hear from you with your suggestions on how I can make The Healthy Gut and our products more awesome for you. I love constructive feedback.  It helps us grow and deliver better things for our community.  And I promise, we listen (and read) everything that comes through. Just reply to this email.

Thanks again for joining our community.

Yours in good gut health,
