Consultation: Share your thoughts on Stats NZ's 2026 long-term insights briefing by 5pm today

Submissions on the topic and scope of our 2026 long-term insights briefing (LTIB) close today at 5pm.

Read the full consultation document and share your feedback.

Even if you agree completely with what we propose, we'd still like to hear from you. It helps us to know that this is a topic we should continue to pursue. Most submissions have taken less than five minutes to complete.

Your submission will inform the focus and scope of our long-term insights briefing. You will then have the opportunity to provide further feedback on the content of the draft briefing in 2025.

About the topic and scope

Our proposed topic is “Integrating environmental and economic measurement in Aotearoa New Zealand”.

While we have a good understanding of the connection between the environment and people’s wellbeing, we understand less about how economic activity and the environment interact with each other.

This topic will present the case for better integration of economic and environmental metrics, and the emerging challenges and opportunities in this space.

Share your feedback on our LTIB.

Consultation outcome and next steps: The future of occupation classifications in Aotearoa New Zealand

On Tuesday 8 October the consultation findings report on the future of occupation classifications in Aotearoa New Zealand was published.

There was overwhelming support (88%) for the proposal to have a tailored occupation classification for New Zealand while maintaining comparability with Australia from a range of stakeholder groups. While views differed in some areas, submitters tended to view the proposal as a positive step forward from the current joint occupation classification (ANZSCO).

Also on Tuesday was the joint decision between the Australian Bureau of Statistics and Stats NZ, that while maintaining comparability, each country will introduce their own tailored occupational statistical classifications.

Next steps: Seeking National Occupation List feedback

We are now seeking feedback on a National Occupation List (NOL), that is due for release on 20 November 2024. Submissions for inclusion in this first release, and feedback on the name and release schedule, close 5pm 30 October 2024

Any submissions received after this date will be considered for the next planned release.

You can find out more about the list and how to provide feedback here.
