R | NEWS + VIEWS Tawnvary 2024 77 30 Years of Self-Empowered, Stigma-Free Recovery! 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of SMART Recovery. Three decades of self-empowered mutual support groups created by individuals with both lived experience and professional training. We've grown and developed over the years into a worldwide movement of science-based and stigma-free mutual support groups that provide practical tools and information about living a balanced life beyond addiction. We plan on marking this milestone at our upcoming conference in Salt Lake City in April. We have a great line up of speakers and presentations, but will make sure there is time for networking and celebrating as well. PODCAST Peer Recovery Coaching In Action Elizabeth Myers (L) and Kelsey Pierce (R) are Peer Recovery Coaches for Utah Support Advocates for Recovery Awareness (USARA), an organization whose mission is to "connect and inspire communities to advocate for addiction recovery." Given the energy and insight these coaches shared as guests on the latest SMART Podcast, it seems clear that Utah is headed in a positive direction. Listen Now SMART CONNECTION STORIES During the month of December, we shared ten new stories of individuals who made SMART Connections by participating in SMART Recovery meetings and applying SMART tools in their own individual journeys. They also each decided to take what they had learned and pay it forward by helping others. This conference will be focused on how we can take further action to make SMART's self-empowering approach accessible and available to all. We are pleased to announce that four dynamic keynote speakers have been confirmed: best-selling author and journalist Maia Szalavitz, collegiate recovery expert Jarmichael Harris, prominent addiction researcher John Kelly, and former President of APA Division 50 SMART Recovery Liese will all be sharing their insights with us at the conference. There are a wide variety of intriguing breakout sessions that have also been confirmed. Those will be announced on or around January 25th.
