Always do these 3 things before updating your website...
We've all been there (yes, including us, at Showit).
One moment you're sailing smoothly on the sea of web design (or managing your own business while being a responsible parent and
awesome friend), the next moment — BAM! — you've hit an iceberg named "Oops!" and you're sinking into the icy waters of "What just
happened?"
Yep, we're talking about those hilariously heartbreaking moments when things go wrong while building a website 😅.
WHEN SHOWIT ADVENTURES TAKE INTERESTING TURNS
Here is the good news: you are not the only one making mistakes.
Yeah, it’s true. We've got some funny stories of errors we’ve made on our websites/templates. These are stories that will probably
make you laugh, cry, and say "Oh, I’m glad it’s not just me!", and for the sake of protecting those responsible, we’ve changed
their names :) (let’s be honest, we are a bit embarrassed of our, sometimes, silly miscalculations)
* Sarah accidentally published her website while it was STILL under construction (anyone else?!). Visitors were confused by the
placing of the text and half-finished pages. But, hey! on the bright side, her site got a lot of attention...just not the kind
she wanted.
* Then there's Mike who decided to customize his 404-error page with a photo of... let’s say, his living room. Except he uploaded
a random picture that was in his downloads folder of his breakfast bagel.
* And there’s always gonna be a typo somewhere, right? Lisa proudly launched her website (as she should) with a big banner saying
"Welcome to the Fuiture!" instead of "Future." But don’t worry, Lisa — the Fuiture sounds like a fun place!
TURNING ERRORS INTO WINS
Mistakes can be the stepping stones to learning... or in this case, the stepping stones to a good laugh.
Either way, here's how these miscalculations turned into pretty awesome stories:
* Sarah now lives by the mindset of, "Always double-check before you hit publish.” She also found a silver lining in her early
launch — it gave her a chance to gather early feedback and make changes before the big reveal.
* Mike now makes sure he's fully awake before handling image uploads. His breakfast bagel 404-error page? It became a sensation
and now he offers a free bagel to every 404-error page visitor!
* Lisa embraced her "Fuiture" typo and made it a part of her brand story. She now sells t-shirts with "Welcome to the Fuiture"
printed on them (we might need to add this to our swag :) )
LESSONS LEARNED
* Check your images: Make sure you are uploading the right image to the right place. And maybe, just maybe, keep your breakfast
photos separate from your website photos.
* Test before launching: Run through your website as if you were a visitor. Check all links, fill out all forms, and make sure
everything is working as it should.
* Proofread everything (and we mean… EVERY SINGLE THING!): From your banner text to your meta descriptions, make sure everything
is in order before you hit that publish button. Remember, autocorrect is not always your friend.
Mistakes happen, but they're not the end of the world. In fact, they're often the start of a good laugh...and an even better
learning experience.
Keep creating, keep laughing, and keep being awesome!
Cheers,
Your friends at Showit
