The other day, I took my 10-year-old son to basketball practice. Now, let me tell you, he's the sweetest and smartest kid (okay, I
might be a bit biased). But he's also the smallest among his friends, and sports aren't really his thing. Still, he has decided to
stick with basketball because he likes his coach and teammates.
After practice, driving home, he said, "You know? I learned something today. I've been in my comfort zone for too long." His
younger brother, curious, asked, "What's a comfort zone?" My son replied, "For me, it's books, video games, and just being home.
It's a place where everything feels easy and enjoyable."
He went on, "But because of that, I haven't improved in basketball. It's not easy for me, so I don't make time to practice. But if
I want to keep up with my teammates, I need to be okay with stepping out of my comfort zone, and work hard at what seems to be
harder to me than others."
He's just a kid, but isn't that a lesson for all of us?
We all have comfort zones that can hold us back if we get too... comfortable. I mean, who wants to do the difficult thing? Who
wants to feel unsettled, distressed, uncomfortable, and always wondering what would have been if...Let me tell you: NOBODY WANTS
IT.
A friend once told me that having a comfort zone isn't bad—we all need one. But if fear of "hard", "difficult", "new", "what if it
doesn't work?", etc., keeps us from stepping out, we become our own barriers to growth.
We all need that place where things are just easy and there’s no struggle because we’re humans. But the line between comfort and
content is thin and, if I might say, dangerous.
Unless you embrace life's uncertainties, you'll never know how capable you are of doing the "hard thing".
* Have that conversation you have been avoiding for weeks.
* Publish that blog post that's been in your drafts for weeks.
* Book that trip you've dreamed of.
* Keep working on your business. I know it might be hard right now, but you've done hard things before and you are still here.
You can't move a mountain in one go, but you can kick a rock. One rock at a time. One "what if" at a time. Like Amy Porterfield
shared during our Spark Conference, “Let go of what is comfortable and step into what is possible.”
Cheers,
Your friend Sarah at Showit
