CRITICALLY,ENDANGERED TURTLES CRITICALLY{ENDANGERED)REEFS - ยฉ JAYNE JENKINS / CORAL REEF IMAGE BANK DID YOU KNOW?! Hawksbill Sea
Turtles like the one pictured above are critically endangered and are the ONLY marine consumer whose diet predominantly comprises
of sponges, thus playing a major role in the health of coral reef ecosystems? Named for their sharp, pointed beaks, adult
hawksbill sea turtles feed primarily on reef sponges whose bodies contain tiny indigestible glass needles and other sessile
invertebrates associated with coral reefs and rocky reefs! Without their "gardening" skills, sponge populations can become so
excessive that they outcompete corals for space. As hawkbills feed on these sponges, they create cleared areas on the reef
substrate, which provides suitable surfaces for new coral larvae to settle and grow thus enhancing the biodiversity of the coral.
This also creates space for other sea organisms to thrive! Unfortunately, our coral reefs are in such poor condition and hawksbill
turtles are critically endangered to become extinct, forever.
