Empowering Small Businesses in the Digital Age: A Must-Read Guide to Web Application & API Security
Posted in on April 22, 2024

Small and medium-sized businesses have increasingly become reliant on web applications – whether they are developed or procured, to drive their operations, engage customers, and scale their businesses. The increasing reliance on online operations is underscored by 84% of businesses using digital technologies. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic forced a surge in online business activity.

Nevertheless, this digital transformation journey brings with it a host of cybersecurity challenges, ranging from data breaches to phishing attacks, which can devastate an SMB’s reputation, financial health, and customer trust. According to Visa Global Back to Business Study 2022, 90% of SMBs with an online presence depend on sales via e-commerce, which highlights the need to make web application security more critical than ever.

As small businesses integrate more software solutions into their workflows and offer online services to customers, APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) become a critical part of their technology stack. APIs allow different software systems to communicate with each other, enabling functionalities like payment processing, customer relationship management, data sharing, and more. However, if an API of these third-party services and platforms, from payment to processing, is not properly secured, it could become a gateway for cybercriminals to access sensitive data, disrupt services, or even take control of systems. This vulnerability is not just a technical issue but can lead to significant financial losses, damage to reputation, and legal consequences, especially with regulations like GDPR and CCPA imposing strict penalties for data breaches.
