Keeping you informed since 1970 Hi Phoenix New Times, When you’re looking for a new restaurant or upcoming events, you might think to browse our website or print issue. But, did you know, just as there’s more to Phoenix than its delicious food and vibrant culture, that we at Phoenix New Times tackle hard-hitting news stories as well?  Take our story about GOP sheriff hopeful Jerry Sheridan, for example. We were actually the only news outlet to rigorously examine his dubious debate claims. One of the things Phoenix New Times does best is hold the powerful to account, and with this story, we were able to draw on the long institutional knowledge of freelancer and former New Times staff writer Stephen Lemons. When Jerry Sheridan tried to whitewash his own history in the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office during a recent primary debate, Lemons quickly put together this story that completely upended Sheridan's preferred narrative. We’ve been investigating issues of local importance since 1970. Just within the last few months, we’ve covered: • Wonk vs. Fighter: The progressive clash for Ruben Gallego's House seat: In this story, TJ L'Heureux gave readers a fascinating look at one of the more interesting primary battles in Phoenix. Almost immediately after it ran, he received calls from multiple people in Arizona's political scene giving him kudos for his reporting and tipping him off to other interesting stories. • How a Tempe man’s mission to feed the homeless landed him in court: The Austin Davis saga has been covered bit by bit by many local news organizations, but no one had told the entire story in one compelling read until TJ L'Heureux did in May. At New Times, we aim to give readers the definitive account of every story as often as we can, and L'Heureux more than delivered here. • Our continued accountability reporting of fatal shootings by Phoenix police casts a critical eye at police narratives, withholding the benefit of the doubt to a powerful (and, according to the U.S. Justice Department, dysfunctional) police force when other outlets so willingly repeat police talking points. We’ve seen our coverage lead to real change in our city and state. Recently, our reporting led Gov. Katie Hobbs to order the state’s healthcare licensing boards to be more transparent in how they investigate complaints and issue discipline to medical providers. We believe Phoenix only improves when you, its residents, feel engaged and connected. That’s why we take our culture coverage as seriously as our investigative reporting. That’s also why we don’t hide our stories behind a paywall. If you feel our work truly does impact your community, then we ask you to show your support today. I’ll go make a contribution right now!
