 I'I NutritionFacts.org
Dear nutritionfacts.org,

In 1985, an influential article was published, proposing that our chronic diseases stem from a disconnect between what our bodies evolved eating during the Stone Age and what now makes up our diet. The paper went on to advocate for a return towards a hunter-gatherer type of diet of lean meats, fruits, vegetables, and nuts, also known as the so-called Paleo Diet.

It might be reasonable to assume our nutritional requirements were established in the past, but why the Paleolithic period? Why only the last 2 million years of human evolution when we split with our last great ape ancestor more like 20 million years ago? For the first 90 percent of our time on Earth, we ate what the rest of the great apes were eating: a diet made up of more than 95 percent plants.

What does this mean for the recent Paleo diet fad? Check out the topic page for more information and videos such as What’s the “Natural” Human Diet? and The Problem with the Paleo Diet Argument.
