NURSING.com,
Its Potassium! Did you guess it right?
One of the first things you learn about potassium . . . NEVER push IV potassium.
Why?
Well, potassium is a critical mineral that plays a large role in the electrical impulses in the body.
Electrical impulses make muscle contractions possible . . .
including the muscles in the heart!
To help us get a picture of just how important potassium is, later this week I am sharing a patient story that actually happened
when I was working on the Cardiovascular Unit.
When I was learning about Potassium in school I would occasionally mix up the values for Potassium and Sodium. But I ended up
finding some great cheatsheets and mnemonics that helped. That's what really worked for me! If you want a copy of our Lab Values
Study Pack, it is yours today for FREE. You can download it here.
♥ Happy Nursing!
