IMPOSTER SYNDROME ๐ค
This is a Giant Redwood - and this is the Giant Redwood Pinecone . . . ๐ฒ

I am always in awe at the magnitude of the Giant Redwoods. The tower 250 feet into the air and live up to 3,500 years.
In fact they are the LARGEST and OLDEST trees on the planet.
But . . .
They start with a tiny pinecone just a little bit bigger than my thumb.
How something so majestic and awe inspiring can grow from something so small and fragile is truly incredible.
Okay, what does that have to do with YOU and nursing?
IMPOSTER SYNDROME: "a psychological condition where people doubt their skills, accomplishments, or talents"
As nurses (and nursing students) I think we are especially prone to the imposter syndrome trap.
We see other students or nurses who we think are "smarter", "more prepared", "harder working", or just plain "better" than us.
And we begin to doubt ourselves and our abilities to the point of questioning our decision to be a nurse in the first place.
But indulge me for a moment . . .
Let's adjust our focus off the Giant Redwood and center it on the pinecone . . . the JOURNEY the pinecone took to become something
so great. The years of struggle, the storms it weathered, the consistent growth each and every year.
Just like the tiny seed - you too will become something GREAT through your JOURNEY. It is not a race. There is no one you need to
compare yourself too.
This is YOUR JOURNEY. No matter how small you feel today - adjust the focus from others and focus on YOUR personal story.
Here are a couple things I have done to help me when imposter syndrome creeps in . . .
1. create personal goals centered around what I value most (not on what others tell me to value)
2. keep a journal - this allows me to look back on my journey and remind myself how far i've come
3. take time away - set aside work, school, stress for a few moments every day - for me this is as simple as a walk around the
park by my house listening to music I enjoy
You ARE good enough. This is YOUR JOURNEY.
Happy Nursing!
