Hello, Everyone!

The South Carolina state Senate has passed a bill banning Chinese citizens from buying or controlling property in the state in an effort to protect South Carolina from foreign adversaries, specifically China and Russia.

Approved by a 31-5 vote on March 23, the bill states that Chinese-owned companies already operating in the state by Dec. 31, 2022 can buy land to expand if the deal is approved by the governor and state Department of Commerce.

The ban does allow Chinese immigrants in the U.S. on “permanent resident status” to buy up to 5 acres for their home. The bill has received criticism for being discriminatory and a waste of time with some questioning the constitutionality of the law - it now heads to the state’s House of Representatives for deliberation.

Harvard's Asia Center secured financial support for the positions through fundraising efforts and there will be three-year term appointments for each instructor, renewable for up to five additional years. The addition of Tagalog courses comes after student advocacy efforts as well as a two-year effort by the Asia Center to increase Southeast Asian studies at Harvard.

The English-language remake will be “a high-stakes, high-octane thriller about a diverse group of young people who team up to fight the system of injustice and inequity and take down the rigged academic institutions around them.”
