The one story you should read today, selected by the editors of New York. c ZXEWZ &055 One Great Story In 2020, the novelist Garth Greenwell suffered an aortic tear that had him hospitalized. “I remember in the hospital feeling like my experience was so vague and shapeless. There was nothing to hold on to. It offered none of the satisfactions of narrative,” he tells fellow novelist Sarah Thankam Mathews in this intimate profile. His third book, Small Rain, draws inspiration from this event, though Greenwell is quick to note that it is a work of fiction. In the novel, an unnamed narrator spends his days undergoing treatment at a midwestern hospital, FaceTiming with his long-term partner, L, and reflecting on America’s political precarity as COVID rages and protests abound. “Its enclosed and high-stakes choice of settings and situations — the ER and ICU during the height of COVID, the hard-won house and loving life partner, the glancing brush with death — grant the novel a blazing universality and grace,” Sarah writes. I couldn’t agree more.  —TOMI OBARO, CULTURE EDITOR, NEW YORK GARTH GREENWELL’S GRAND ROMANCE THE AUTHOR EXPLORES THE TENDER SIDE OF LONG-TERM PARTNERSHIP AMID A HEALTH CRISIS IN HIS BEST NOVEL YET.
