HOME APOTHECARY
A home apothecary is a tradition passed down through many cultures. You can embrace the healing power of plants and herbs by keeping them on hand for use in your daily life.

Powerhouse Plants

CHAMOMILE
This flower is a member of the Asteraceae, or daisy family, that has become a popular tea and is often used to ease an upset stomach, gas, diarrhea, insomnia, and anxiety.

How to Use It:
Steep for just two minutes and chamomile boasts a flavor similar to apple juice. In fact, the word chamomile comes from the Greek word “earth apple.” You can easily add this tea, warm or cool, to juices and smoothies, or enjoy it on its own. After two minutes of steeping, this herb takes on a more bitter flavor, which can help stimulate digestive enzymes.

CITRUS
The bright, tangy, and sweet flavors of citrus fruits are just what the body needs this time of year, as grapefruits, oranges, mandarins, lemons, and limes are all at their peak. These fruits deliver a high dose of vitamin C, which can help support the immune system, along with B vitamins, potassium, magnesium, and copper.

A Citrus Recipe to Enjoy

ORANGE JUICE SMOOTHIE
The classic “Orange Julius” drink originated in Los Angeles in the 1920s. Here’s a version that brings together frozen banana, fresh orange juice, your choice of milk or yogurt, and a little vanilla for a sweet, refreshing flavor.

Ingredients
1 cup fresh orange juice (4 medium oranges)
1 frozen banana
¼ cup plant-based milk (or yogurt)
¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions
1. Peel oranges and juice.
2. Add juice to a blender with banana, milk, and vanilla.
3. Blend until smooth, about 45-60 seconds, and enjoy!

Recipe Tips: Use Greek yogurt to add 7 grams of protein to this smoothie. Make it green by adding a handful of spinach or frozen zucchini. Try a variety of citrus like tangerines, clementines, or satsuma for an even sweeter taste.
