How to manage an underperforming team member

Chances are, if you’re a Monday Girl, you’re probably a star performer and committed to finding value and brining results at work. Still, you probably know first-hand that not everyone at work will share the same attitude. Whether due to a lack of motivation, laziness, or personal circumstances, dealing with an underperforming team member can be anxiety-inducing. Here are 3 ways to effectively manage an employee who is falling short:

Don’t ignore the problem - According to Joseph Weintraub, professor of management and organizational behavior at Babson College, issues of underperformance go unaddressed too often, leading to the manager transferring the person to another team or else letting them stay put without doing anything. While you might think taking on the extra work yourself is a way to step up to the plate, in reality, this often leads to a culture of demoralization, frustration, and overwork on your team.

Consider the cause - You don’t want your irritation to cloud your judgement so it’s important to do your best to evaluate this person’s performance objectively and consider any challenges they might be experiencing that are leading to their inability to perform. For instance, you can have a confidential conversation with their previous manager or analyze the internal processes of your team to determine if there is a roadblock that might be inhibiting their workflow. What’s more, take into account their attitude at work. Has their performance recently slipped or have they always been underperforming? Do they seem keen to learn but it simply struggling? The answer to these questions should inform whether this person is actually coachable.

Create a plan - Ultimately, you need to have an open and honest conversation with your underperforming team member. Give them time to respond to your concerns and offer a concrete plan that gives them the leeway to improve and develop new skills. It’s important to align on measurable actions so you can regularly track their progress. Of course, if you find they are still unable to meet expectations after an agreed upon period, it might be worth reevaluating their presence on the team. On the other hand, if you see demonstrable growth and a positive attitude, be sure to acknowledge this change!

You got this! it’s time to raise the bar, one person at a time. #TGIM
