2024 AKWESASNE WINTER CARNIVAL: MCA VS SRMT BATTLE ROYALE
After a long hiatus, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne once again faced off against the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe for the 2024 MCA vs. SRMT Battle Royale. This epic showdown marked four years since the last Battle Royale was held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Although MCA came up short for the overall win, everyone in attendance enjoyed a fun day of Akwesasne team building and camaraderie.
MCA congratulates the Tribe in showing up with great enthusiasm and talent. Nia:wen to those who organized all the activities and thanks to all staff who participated in the events. We will be ready for you next year SRMT!

RECENT

NOTICE FROM HYDRO-QUEBEC 

Hydro-Québec is informing the community that they will start issuing notices of interruption of power for customers who have overdue accounts during the week of March 18, 2024. Interruptions of power will then follow starting on April 15, 2024, for customers who have not settled their situation, either by making a payment arrangement or by paying off their overdue amount.

Customers can call Hydro-Quebec’s customer services at 1-888-385-7252 in order to settle their situation and avoid having their power disconnected.

STICKS AND PUCKS
Join Akwesasne Child and Family Services for Sticks and Pucks on Saturday, February 24 between 12:00 pm -2:00 pm at the the Anowara’ko:wa Arena.  During this free family skate, all participants must wear a helmet.  There will be a limited amount of helmets and sticks available. Food and refreshments will be provided.

2024 HALF LOAD ROAD RESTRICTIONS FOR TRUCKERS & SHIPPERS

Please be advised that all roadways under the jurisdiction of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne will have a posted weight limit of five (5) tonnes per axle (also known as “Half Loads”), effective March 4, 2024. This is to protect the road system during the spring thaw. 

The Akwesasne Mohawk Police will be monitoring vehicle traffic and enforcing the weight restrictions while they remain in place.

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Sahatihahará:ne Detox Center is informing the community that Dr. Scott will be on-site at the Sahatihahará:ne Detox Center on Friday, February 23rd from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. for pre-admission screenings.


Pre-admission screenings are conducted in-person at the Detox Center or via telephone. Admission for detox services will be for Monday, February 26, 2024.

KANONHKWA’TSHERI:IO SWEETGRASS LANE ENTRANCE TEMPORARILY CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is notifying the community that the Kanonhkwa’tsheri:io Health Facility (KHF) building entrance on Sweetgrass Lane (between KHF and the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Services station) is closed to public access until further notice.

All community members who are entering the health facility for any appointments are to use the main entrance on Hilltop Drive, and to report to reception to let them know where you are heading in the facility. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

DON’T BE TRASHY…RECYCLE!
Please be reminded that recyclable materials will be collected from our three districts every Tuesday. If domestic waste is not collected as scheduled, it will be collected as soon as possible or the following day. The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne encourages all residents to recycle. Niawenhkó:wa for doing your part to keep our Mother Earth clean!

BULK ITEMS:
We remind everyone to put out large items on the last day of the month for regular service in your area. This will allow the contractor to collect large items on a monthly cycle. Please put materials out a little at a time and ensure that they are:
• bundled
• no more than 50 lbs. in weight
• no longer than 2 ft, or 2’x2’ square

ADDITIONAL SERVICES:
For the collection of any item with a refrigerant, please note there is a $15 service charge and must be paid to the driver at the time of pick-up. This includes refrigerators, air conditioners, water coolers, dehumidifiers, freezers, etc.

There is a $5 fee per tire for regular tires and must be paid at the time of pick-up to the driver.

MOHAWK COUNCIL OF AKWESASNE GENERAL ELECTION
Pursuant to the Akwesasne Election Law 2019/2020 - #212, Tessa Jocko, Acting Executive Director (formerly known as the Chief Administrative Officer) for the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, is announcing the date of the next Mohawk Council of Akwesasne General Election. 

This announcement is in accordance with the Akwesasne Election Law, Section 3.(12), that  states: “The Chief Administrative Officer [Executive Director] is responsible for notification to the general public of  the General Election or By-Election.”

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne shall be comprised of one Grand Chief and twelve District Chiefs, consisting of four (4) District Chiefs from each district.  

The candidate for the position of Grand Chief receiving the highest number of votes from all three districts shall be declared elected.

The four (4) candidates receiving the highest number of votes in a district for the position of District Chief shall be declared elected. 

The position of Grand Chief and District Chiefs shall be determined at the General Election. Therefore, the Executive Director is announcing the General Election for the positions of Grand Chief and District Chiefs will be held on June 29, 2024.

This epic showdown marked four years since the last Battle Royale was held due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although MCA came up short for the overall win, everyone in attendance enjoyed a fun day of Akwesasne team building and camaraderie.
