Hello Friend, Mental Health America invites you to participate in the Kids Online Safety Act Day of Action, which takes place today. Urge your U.S. Senators to co-sponsor this legislation and urge Senate leadership (Senators Schumer and McConnell) to bring the legislation to the floor for a vote before the end of the year. The Kids Online Safety Act (S.1409) will hold social media companies accountable for ensuring safety on their platforms and addressing mental health harms. Forty-nine Senators are already co-sponsoring the legislation, evenly split by party, but we need more co-sponsors and we need all Senators to be pushing for a vote in the full Senate. Mental health is a bipartisan issue — members across the aisle agree that increases in anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and self-harm must be addressed. The Surgeon General agrees in an advisory about the effects of social media on youth. And unfortunately, most of the burden is on individuals and families to reduce these harms, rather than on the platforms themselves. Research has shown that some online platforms have been intentionally designed to keep users on longer and increase exposure to harmful content, even as bullying and harassment increase. Please join us in sending letters and posting messages to the U.S. Senate today, November 8th, and encourage your network to do the same! |
