Up to one-third of patients with colorectal cancer have a family member who also had the disease. In fact, patients with family members diagnosed under 50 may be more likely to carry Lynch syndrome, a common inherited syndrome linked to colorectal cancer. While you can’t change all of your risk factors, there are things you can do to lower your odds of colorectal cancer: * Be physically active and eat a diet low in fat and high in fiber to help prevent the disease. * Avoid or quit tobacco use to lower your risk of developing colon polyps or many different kinds of cancer. * Discuss your risk factors with your primary care provider so they can guide you on when to start screening. * Follow through on colorectal cancer screening.
