Read the full article Colorectal cancer affects approximately 153,000 new people every year, yet it’s also one of the most preventable types of cancer. Read on to learn the facts about colorectal cancer, including what you can do to help prevent the disease. Your genetics can significantly impact your chances of developing colorectal cancer. Up to one-third of patients with colorectal cancer have a family member who also had the disease. In fact, patients with family members diagnosed under 50 may be more likely to carry Lynch syndrome, a common inherited syndrome linked to colorectal cancer. It’s important to let your doctor know if you have a family history of the disease so they can ensure you start screening at the right age. Read more. You can lower your risk with these healthy habits. While you can’t change all of your risk factors, there are things you can do to lower your odds of colorectal cancer: * Be physically active and eat a diet low in fat and high in fiber to help prevent the disease. * Avoid or quit tobacco use to lower your risk of developing colon polyps or many different kinds of cancer. * Discuss your risk factors with your primary care provider so they can guide you on when to start screening. * Follow through on colorectal cancer screening.
