Hi koha-pet,

We’ve all been there, right? You don’t pay attention to what you are eating and (oh boy) … the pounds start to add up. Whelp humans—we aren’t alone in needing to pay attention to what and how much we eat.

According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention more than 50% of dogs are overweight or obese. That’s right…upwards of 50 MILLION dogs fall into this category in the U.S. alone! And letting our best buds get too overweight can put them at greater risk of osteoarthritis, heart disease and even many types of cancer.

It’s literally a growing problem…and we pet parents can help.

So we figured we’d use October’s National pet Obesity Awareness Month to offer up some tips to help you avoid the pitfalls of a husky … well … husky.

Playtime with dog

Daily playtime with your dog is a great way to keep them fit!

DITCH THE JUNKY FILLERS Traditional pet foods (particularly kibble) can be full of of fillers like potatoes, corn, green peas etc…and calories. Look for a high-protein food that is low in fat like our Pure Shreds and consider adding a low calorie boost of Green Mix!

KEEP THAT PUP MOVING
Exercise and fun isn’t just for pups! Keep your dog burning calories by dedicating time each day to getting outside for a walk or some fetch.

AVOID OVERFEEDING
Those sad eyes are tempting, but it's important to avoid giving them everything they want. Pay attention to portions, set a feeding schedule and consider avoiding "free feeding" if you find that bowl being emptied often.

CHECK WITH THAT VET
While it’s easy to see that your pet packed on a few pounds, it’s important to talk to your veterinarian to get a good sense for the severity of the situation. They are your go-to source for a plan on shedding that weight!

Here’s to a world full of fit fidos!
Now, maybe I should put down these chips.
