Sometimes we take a glance back, usually on Throwback Thursday, where it's more a quick look at past projects or discontinued items or even Kickstarter stuff. Timehop Tuesday is going to be a more in-depth look back. It can include anything from ideas that never came to fruition to the evolution of a design to today's topic the ever-elusive color orange.

If you've been around long enough, you know orange has always been a hot seller for us. I don't think that's abnormal in the writing instrument world. Orange seems to be quite popular because it's always in such short supply. Whether it's the 2007 Pilot Vanishing Point LE or the Montblanc Mahatma Gandhi ink or the classic Delta Dolce Vita pens; people love the color orange and there doesn't seem to be enough of it

We were fortunate enough to source orange anodize when we started machining retail products. At the time, there were two different local anodizers that had orange as an option. Unfortunately, by 2014 that changed and orange options for our pens disappeared until 2017 when we found an out-of-state anodizer who had an amazing orange. All was good in the universe for a few years.

The only official special edition on the Mini K, was the Orange is the New Black edition we released in 2018. We'd already decided to discontinue the Mini K but wanted to offer something cool with some of the leftover pens. This run was quite small, less than 100 total pens, it was one of the better looking special editions we'd released on a capped pen to that point.

In 2019, we were able to get almost all of our standard pens anodized in orange, and didn't really offer any orange special edition or limited edition products. There were a couple of outliers in VERY small quantities, but we did do product planning for 2020 and sent those pens out early so we made sure to have them on hand for their respective releases.

The Bugs Bunny anniversary "Carrot" bolt was one of these pens that was sent to the anodizer in 2019, but released in 2020. An unlicensed and unofficial anniversary pen that we simply called the Carrot Bolt was a huge success with it's matte orange anodized body and medium green knob. I'm still angry at mine going missing from my desk.

We also released three different orange EDK variants in 2020. A very small amount of Matte Orange GroovEDK (V1 pens at that) were released early on in a special limited sale. Then we released a gloss orange standard EDK and a Matte Orange with Black Standard EDK. There were plans for a Matte Orange Fluted EDK but those fell through when the pens came back completely ruined. But 2020 was a HUGE year for orange special release pens with 7 released and another three planned out. But, we also lost our orange anodizer in 2020 and were once again on the lookout for this popular color

Though we're still looking for an anodizer who does good orange that is close to Arizona, we've added orange plastics to our Decograph and Vertex pens throughout the years. We lucked into purchasing a massive amount of the Delta material used to make the Dolce Vita when Delta shuttered it's doors. We made several batches of Vertex fountain pens from this material, plus a Limited Edition serialized Decograph with that material before we ran out of the rods.

We also located a professional Cerakote applicator just a few miles from our shop. This was a huge windfall, because Hunter Orange Cerakote is an amazing color, and we've added it to multiple pens in the last two years.

2021 was the first Hunter Orange release, but 2022 saw us expand with numerous pens like this Hunter Orange Fluted Retrakt that we did in very small quantities. We also released some distressed Hunter Orange pens for Halloween in 2022 that were very popular AND a Hunter Orange Retraktable (see below as those are still in stock).

Hunter Orange Cerakte is now our main option for metal pens in orange. We still have plans to release more Vertex and Decographs in different shades of orange, but our metal writing instruments will only be available with the Cerakote finish for the foreseeable future. With the addition of the aluminum Vertex and new INK V2 grip sections, we've sent some of those pens off for the Hunter Orange treatment, and those will be our next releases in this amazing color. Hopefully, we can find a new anodizer that has an orange option, until then we'll find a way to keep as much orange in stock as we can.

GET YOUR ORANGE ON!

Today's best national day features a sweet treat from Japan, mochi. This is a new one to me; it was only last year that I sampled my first bite of mochi and was highly intrigued. Are they little condensed clouds wrapped in what looks like chewing gum sprinkled in sugar? Maybe. They could also be tiny little ghosts that have come to inhabit confectionary treats to bring joy to the faces of young and old. They come in variety of colors and flavors and are massively significant to the Japanese people and well they should be. They were invented in the 3rd century likely around the time Japan learned to cultivate rice. Oh yeah, I failed to mention they're made from glutinous rice, hence the importance. There are a variety of styles with different fillings and colors, and they've become so popular you can now get them at supermarkets in the United States. That's why today's best national day is National Mochi Day. Enjoy!
