Reptilandia

A unique herpetological experience

If you ever find yourself in the area of Johnson City, Texas, check out Reptilandia Reptile Lagoon and Ethnographics Museum! This unique attraction is more than a herpetarium. Reptilandia's mission is education and conservation, while their focus is teaching visitors about reptiles and their significance in nature as well as human culture.

This massive exhibit features multiple species including Gulf hammock rat snakes, banded water snakes, map turtles, spotted turtles, crested anoles, Florida box turtles, and a snapping turtle.

Visitors get to explore 21 indoor animal exhibits comprising 8 different biomes from around the world to learn about reptiles and the environments in which they live. Then they move to the attached ethnographics museum to experience a diverse collection of man-made objects from multiple indigenous tribes that show how reptiles have influenced human cultures throughout history. What a cool experience!

This exhibit features Australian water dragons. How many can you spot in this photo?

While you're there, be sure to check out the shield-tail agama exhibit featuring shield tails bred and donated by Josh's Frogs! We're happy to send them to a good home where they can help further Reptilandia's mission. For more information about Reptilandia, click the green button below to explore their website:

Fun Facts

Not all tarantulas are silent! Some Australian species, such as Selenocosmia crassipes pictured below, are known as whistling or barking spiders because they can produce sounds by rubbing their mouth parts (chelicerae) together.
