End of an era: Crews removing the last of the “Ramps to Nowhere”

Earlier this month crews began removing the last of the “Ramps to Nowhere” in the Washington Park Arboretum. These ramps were constructed to connect SR 520 to the proposed R.H. Thompson Expressway. The Expressway, also known as the Empire Expressway, was planned to run along the eastern border of the Arboretum but never got built.

Demolition work is scheduled to continue through the end of March.

Beginning next week: Daytime drilling in Portage Bay for geotechnical soil sampling

In preparation for the Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project, crews will drill 10 test holes in Portage Bay – also referred to as “geotechnical test borings” – to collect soil samples around the project area (see map of drilling locations below). The soil samples will be collected from small barges.

This type of site investigation involves evaluating the soil, rock and groundwater conditions within a given depth and location and helps engineers determine the physical properties surrounding a construction site.

Work will begin the week of March 4 and continue through early April. Nearby neighbors can expect increased noise around the work areas from the drill and other equipment used to bore the holes and collect the soil samples.

Regardless of the outcome of this year’s legislative session and when project construction begins, these new samples will further inform the project design and help determine the types of tools and construction methods that may be needed.

Note: Additional on-land drilling locations may be added on both the east and west sides of Portage Bay. We will notify adjacent neighbors in advance of this work.
