Aloha kākou,
A wildfire has been burning on the island of Maui near the road leading to Haleakalā National Park’s Summit District since last night. As of 11 a.m. the 420-acre wildfire was 15% contained. Government and private sector resources have been working hard to fight the fire, which is not threatening homes or businesses at this time.
Key information for visitors:
-
Haleakalā National Park’s Summit District is closed until further notice and is not accessible at this time.
-
Haleakalā National Park sunrise reservations are canceled until further notice. Haleakalā National Park’s Kīpahulu District in East Maui remains open.
-
The fire is many miles away from Kahului Airport and Maui’s resort areas. Road closures at this time are limited to roadways in the area approaching Haleakalā’s summit.
General tips for fire safety for visitors:
-
Avoid driving vehicles on dry grass or brush, including pulling over or parking. Heat from a vehicle’s engine and undercarriage could start a fire.
- Always dispose of cigarettes responsibly.
- If you see smoke or signs of a fire, call 911.
The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority is actively monitoring the situation and is in continuous communication with state and county emergency management officials, as well as our Global Marketing Team and visitor industry partners and will provide updates.
