Wine 101 🐝 Alcohol in wine can be a bit like a hug, there are those that give you a quick in and out hug, those that hug with a squeeze and those that go all in with a big rib-breaking, lift-you-in-the-air grapple. Think of Sparkling wine as your passing hug, the alcohol is there and not there all at the same time! The squeeze is your whites and light reds, there is a nice balance of alcohol and has all the hallmarks of a good hug but doesn’t want to get in the way. Your grapple that leaves you breathless are your full-bodied red wines, these wines give you a big whack with alcohol and will leave you feeling it for at least a couple of minutes. Sometimes life calls for any one of these hugs, so to find out what you need and when you need it. Bottle of the Week 🍦 Old Mates Chenin Blanc 2022 We love a great duet at GPD. We think the 2022 Old Mates Chenin Blanc, our project wine with Craven Wines (South Africa), is as iconic as Dua Lipa and Elton John’s hit song ‘Cold Heart’. Hey we’re kidding, Queen and David Bowie’s ‘Under Pressure’ is a better comparison. Unlike Vanilla Ice, who got in trouble for sampling the intro of ‘Under Pressure’, you’ll be sipping pretty when you sample this delicious Chenin Blanc by GPD x Craven Wines. We couldn’t believe our luck when Mick and Jeanine Craven decided to jam with us! We love their sustainable farming approach and see lots of potential from their unique sites in Stellenbosch. These wines are handcrafted with a hands-off approach and are singing with terroir expression. This is high-energy juice! With zesty lemon, cumquat and mandarin flavours mixed with pear, chalk and hay. The wine is medium-bodied and has an attractive, somewhat pulpy texture. Best served chilled, just don’t forget the ‘Ice Ice Baby!’ Grape of the Week TASTES LIKE PAIRS WITH O S s CHENINBLANG s i % O O FAMOIISlY FROM FANCY FACT Chenin Blanc is a high acid grape that is capable of producing high quality . 7 still, sparklingand sweet wines! e @ France @ South Africa GaD 🧀 Chenin Blanc ⚡️ TL:DR: Probably the most versatile, and certainly one of the greatest, white grapes on the planet. 💬 Pronounced: "shen-in blonk" 🌈 Colour: A white grape that produces still, sparkling or sweet wines 🍇 What is it? Probably the most versatile, and certainly one of the greatest, white grapes on the planet, this white grape with thrillingly high acidity can produce still, sparkling or sweet wine in a range of styles. Originally from the Loire Valley in France, where it has been cultivated for nearly 1300 years, it has spread to all corners of the globe albeit in small quantities.  Chenin loves growing in a cool climate, so maintains the high acidity levels which allow it to produce these wines of many different styles; from crisp and dry still wines, to sparkling, and off-dry wines, through to lusciously sweet botrytis-affected dessert wines. The Loire truly has a style of Chenin Blanc for everyone! Regardless of style, it should have aromas of apples and pears, with honey and delicate flowers like daisy or chamomile, and a hint of beeswax. There can often be a 'wet wool' or paraffin oil character to the more complex ones, and show plenty of acidity with a crunchy, steely mineral character. Chenin has found great success outside of France; in South Africa, it's considered the flagship white grape, with old bush vines in Stellenbosch and Swartland making intensely concentrated, rich wines that lean toward tropical fruit flavours. Chenin thrives in California, growing more than all of France! Australia too has proven promise, with wineries building quite a following for their bone dry, yet richly textured styles, with the most exciting coming from Margaret River and McLaren Vale. Some small amounts can also be found in New Zealand, Canada, and Chile, with the best consistently coming from cooler sites. 📍Place of Origin: Loire Valley in France 🌎 Today's Major Countries of Production: France, South Africa, Australia, USA, Argentina 🍕 Pairing Tip: Chenin Blanc is a fabulous food pairing wine — with its sky-high acidity, it brings unparalleled energy to the table! It’s going to pair really well with creamy chicken or pork dishes, meatier flaky fish and rich seafood (especially white crabmeat and lobster!). Not to mention, it sings wonderfully with Cantonese classics like sweet ‘n’ sour dishes served with all your favourite sides. And let's not overlook some tried and true absolute classics: Lighter meats like veal and pork work very well here, along with richer seafood dishes and soft cheeses, especially chèvre. 🤔 Interesting to Note: The ageing ability of sweet Loire Valley Chenin Blanc is among the longest-lived in the world of wine, with well-made examples from favourable vintages regularly having the potential to last for at least 100 years! Level up your wine game - the fun way! Wine News ⚖️ Prosecco: Italy VS Australia The Italian Consorzio has gone to great lengths to protect the appellation of their beloved Prosecco. However thanks in large part to a certain US reality TV star, and the introduction of the ‘Prosecco’ grape to Italy, the battle for Prosecco hits new heights. Recipe of the Week 🍤 You can't go too far wrong with a good old Korma. Typically made with succulent pieces of chicken, this twist on a classic sees salmon chunks and prawns in its place. Intense and aromatic, there are a number of directions you could take a wine pairing here. We especially loved this dish with a creamy white wine, an off-dry number or even a light and fruit-driven red. 🥂 Pair this recipe with: Lark Hill ‘Regional’ Grenache 2022 Azalea Nerello Mascalese 2021 Oceans Collide Chardonnay 2019 Post of the Week 👀 🍷  📸 Natasha B. from the GPD Wine Lovers Facebook Group GPD Wine Lovers Facebook Group Our Facebook member space is up and running so you can connect with other Good Pair Days friends, share favourite bottles, wine jokes, pairing tips, producers, wine tips and tricks, feedback, fun articles and more.
