Wine 101 🥟 8 Lucky Lunar Pairings One of the world’s biggest celebrations is the Lunar New Year A.K.A Chinese New Year. 2023 is ‘The Year of the Rabbit’ and in Chinese culture the rabbit represents hope and a long lived life. What more can you need in life than a good dose of hope and plenty of years to look forward to. So with celebrations in full swing, we have put together a wine pairing guide to some classic dishes to have during this period of celebration in the hope that you’ll truly get into the spirit.  Bottle of the Week 😎 Willow & Goose 'Sunflower Swing' Pinot Noir 2022 Summer is in full swing this week. It’s giving me chilled red-on-the-porch vibes... it’s giving me – Willow & Goose ‘2022 'Sunflower Swing' Pinot Noir. If you didn’t know, Willow & Goose Wines is a tale of love, heartbreak, growth and resilience like none other. Like all too many, Jack Wilson’s world was turned upside down in the 2019-20 bushfires, losing his family home of 20 years. But with the help of family and community, Jack was able to start over. The ‘new barn with old charm’ at 1900 Lobethal Road was hand built with many late nights, lots of ‘she’ll be right’ ingenuity (beer and a few wonky screws), and plenty of cheer in the face of adversity. Today Jack Wilson aka Willow ‘pays it forward’ with proceeds from each bottle going to two charities, one to bushfire recovery and the other to wine4water, a charity combating the global clean water crisis; an issue close to Willow’s big heart. The 2022 'Sunflower Swing' Pinot Noir is one to enjoy with friends. Lovely rose perfume here. It’s a super soft, fruit-forward Pinot. The palate develops from juicy red fruits to foresty, wet-earth characters and a sweet spice finale. Best enjoyed at a swingin’ party down the line 🎵. Grape of the Week TASTES LIKE PAIRS WITH "'ver-men- tee noh" @ b % Salt Zesty Botanicals Herbs FAMOUSLY FROM FANCY FACT A5 e Vermentino is an ancient grape but O has in recent years been coined ? % 5 "the grape of the future - 2 w 22850 because it can handle the S I heat of progressively warming L Ui Q vineyards across the globe! 🌿 Vermentino ⚡️ TL:DR: Salty, unique white from an island off the coast of Italy. 💬 Pronounced: "ver-men-tee-noh” 🌈 Colour: White 🍇 What is it? Vermentino is your new bestie if you like aromatic, zesty, food-friendly and textural whites with a savoury twist! It’s a light-skinned variety that loves growing in warm regions near the sea, where the reflected light adds an extra level of ripeness to the grapes. Flavours include pink grapefruit, white nectarine, pear and fresh herbs, with a green almond twist and a saline, pebbly minerality. Often unoaked, styles can be fresh and acidity-driven or slightly richer and more textural. Either way, Vermentino is absolutely delicious with freshly-caught shellfish, pesto (which also comes from Liguria, naturally) or a spanking bowl of spaghetti alla vongole! In 2018 the name ‘Vermentino’ was subject to legal name claiming, the same way Champagne and Prosecco had in the past. You see, Italy initially won exclusive rights to show Vermentino on their labels. Their way of saying, we made this popular, we did it best and first. But Australia, Crotia and US disagreed and successfully negotiated for permission shortly after. Not all regions were so lucky - you’ve got to feel for the French, they’ve had Vermentino since the early 1900s, but the popular Vermentino producing regions of Languedoc and Provence are no longer allowed to use Vermentino on their labels, opting to use Rolle instead. Way to roll with the punches France!  Many experts oppose the ‘protection’ of historical grape names, challenging any country’s exclusive right to use varietal names on their label. Wine writer Jancis Robinson states ‘established varieties such as Vermentino were born from natural crossings that occurred spontaneously in the vineyard, without any help from human hands. Therefore they belong in the public domain.’  Detractors dismiss this legal practice as not so much about ‘protection’ but a strategy for commercial gain! What are your thoughts? We’re impartial, but we see potential for a Law & Order spin-off called Special Varieties Unit. A one season hit wonder! 📍Place of Origin: Italy, from the island of Sardinia, and coastal Liguria. 🌎 Today's Major Countries of Production: Italy and France 🍕 Pairing Tip: The salinity in these wines means it works wonderfully well with seafood - think mussels, octopus, a great pasta (linguine!) with clams, or get creative with a king oyster mushroom scallops. 🤔 Interesting to Note: Depending on where it is grown, Vermentino can also be called Pigato (Liguria), Favorita (Piedmont) or Rolle (Provence, Languedoc-Roussillon and Corsica). Wine News 🍽 Bodega Catena Zapata opens a new restaurant! OK, so it might be in Argentina’s wine capital of Mendoza, but pioneering producer Bodega Catena Zapata has opened a restaurant. The famous winery has opened the doors to its wine-focused restaurant, where diners can sample local, traditional dishes alongside some of Argentina’s (and the world’s) most celebrated wines.  Recipe of the Week 🍤 Keeping it simple this week with a fabulous, easy dish to replicate at home. Salmon is such a wonderful, wine-friendly fish, and coated in a light, fluffy, crispy batter this is a lovely dish to entertain friends and family. Shallow fried, we are looking for wines here that are going to clean the palate and balance out these wonderful flavours.  🥂 Pair this recipe with: Old Mates Rosé 2022 Fabrizio Vella 'Bianco' Catarratto 2021 Margan 'Breaking Ground' Albariño 2021 Post of the Week Two things you can never have too many of: great wines delivered and cute kittens.  📸 Carol G. from the FB group GPD Wine Lovers Facebook Group Our Facebook member space is up and running so you can connect with other Good Pair Days friends, share favourite bottles, wine jokes, pairing tips, producers, wine tips and tricks, feedback, fun articles and more.
