Groundcovers may be small, but their roles in the garden should not be overlooked. Once established, many groundcovers tend to grow rather quickly, and while doing so, will beautifully redefine challenging bare areas. They may perform as living mulches by reducing evaporation, providing ground-level shade, winter root protection, and suppressing the growth of weeds. Groundcovers are fantastic, low-maintenance choices for stabilizing sloped areas prone to erosion, and their dense coverage also protects the soil from becoming compacted by rainfall. Groundcovers have the ability to completely transform difficult areas in the garden, where turf is unwanted or impossible to maintain or grow. There are groundcovers for every condition.
