FluentPet Celebrate Hard-working Dog Professionals
Happy Labor Day! Our canine companions are an indispensable part of the workforce, and to celebrate this holiday, we’ll take a
look at some of the important jobs they do.
Service Dogs
Service dogs have been specially trained to assist people with disabilities. A few of their many responsibilities might include
assisting with day-to-day activities, providing mobility and stability support, alerting to medical emergencies for handlers with
seizures, diabetes or allergies, and mitigating psychiatric conditions in a variety of ways. In order to accompany their handler
everywhere they go, they are trained to behave and stay calm in a variety of situations.
Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, Poodles and Poodle mixes are common service dog breeds, but service dogs
come in all shapes and sizes depending on the type of work they need to perform!
Therapy Dogs
Therapy dogs are at the center point of animal-assisted interventions. These dogs provide emotional support in a variety of
settings such as therapies, schools, nursing homes, hospitals, etc. Scientists have found that when we interact and cuddle with
these dogs, our bodies release oxytocin, which is a hormone that has been shown to lower stress and anxiety.
Dogs of all breeds and sizes can be therapy dogs, but the right temperament and training is an absolute necessity.
Police and Military Dogs
K-9s assist police officers and soldiers in the line of duty. They have been trained to protect their handlers, chase down and
immobilize criminals, help on patrols, and even sniff out illegal substances and explosives.
The most common breeds for police and military dogs are German and Dutch Shepherds as well as Belgian Malinois.
Search Rescue Dogs
Search-and-rescue dogs stand out with their great agility and extraordinary sense of smell and hearing. They are highly trained
and participate in tracking, specialized searches, cadaver location, avalanche and water rescues.
Common search and rescue breeds include: Bloodhound, Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Belgian Malinois, German Shepherd, St.
Bernard, Bernese Mountain Dog, Newfoundland and more.
Herding Dogs
Herding dogs have been bred for the job. While they may have the natural urge to herd, it still takes a lot of training and
practice to perfect the art of herding live animals. Most of today’s herding breeds turned companion dogs end up having to learn
not to chase cars or nip heels. But their high intelligence and unparalleled work ethic allow them to excel at just about
anything. Including learning how to use sound buttons!
A few common herding breeds are Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, Collie, Shetland Sheepdog, Australian Cattle Dog, Kelpie, and
Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
