not fast & furious

As my five-year-old daughter squeezed the nozzle to fill my gas tank, I scanned the parking lot for prey. I felt like Paul Walker as my blue eyes searched for a driver to disgrace in a drag race. Then our eyes met. She was the one. As she gripped her steering wheel, her two-year-old son inflated her tires. She wore a tee that read: "Not Fast & Furious" paired with a picture of a sloth wearing glasses. The irony. No, I don't let my youngest daughter pump my gas— We were in the children's play garage at the Please Touch Museum in Philly this weekend. So my drag racing fantasy wasn't real, but that sloth tee... it definitely was. Look, I get it. The play on the words using the popular movie "Fast & Furious" paired with a cute sloth— it's funny. But if you'll allow me to be serious for a moment, Few Will Hunt... When you put this sloth tee on, how does it REALLY make you feel about your day ahead—and yourself in your head? Do you put it on and say, "I'm going to have the most productive day possible" or "I'm going to be the best ______ (me, parent, partner, etc.) possible today"? Does it tell your mind that you are a person who gets the job done with energy and vigor? It doesn't.  What you wear matters. Your choice of clothing sets your mind's tone for the day. Whether you realize it or not. It's science: What you wear impacts your psychological processes and behavior. (I recently spoke about this "enclothed cognition" on The FWH Show.) So, please, do me a favor... The next time you put on a tee-- ask yourself who it is inspiring you to be. If you don't like the answer, you can make a better choice.
