My youngest daughter, Cecilia, was on break from her dance class when she peeked at my drawing and said:
“Daddy, one question, is the world melting in your drawing?”
“It is, Cecilia, yes.”
“For real? Is it because the floor is lava?” she asked, wide-eyed.
“Ha, no, it’s because the floor is… low.”
Trying to make sense of my answer, she replied:
“Oh, it gets so low that it just melts everything like lava!”
“In a way, yes… when you get older, you’ll understand.”
Cecilia is too young to understand what’s going on in the world right now. I pray (and work) for a change so she will never have
to understand it.
See, our floor, our minimum personal standard, is so low nowadays that it’s bringing everything else down with it.
It’s sagging under the weight of personal excuses instead of being supported by the strength of personal excellence.
It’s softening all other standards we’ve worked so hard to build— our standards as families, schools, communities, countries, and,
overall, as a world.
The solution is hard work… not only hard work done by and on self, but hard work done by and through community.
This is how we set the standard. This is how we raise the floor.
That’s my opinion anyway.
