3 JULY 1883 - 3 JUNE 1924

“All I am is literature, and I am not able or willing to be anything else.” – Franz Kafka

The centenary of the death of Franz Kafka gives us the opportunity to reflect on one of the greatest and most influential European authors.

The Austrian writer Hermann Broch said: The sole raison d'etre of a novel is to discover what only the novel can discover.

With some of the deepest, crisp, darkly comic and evocative prose you will ever read there is no doubt that Kafka is a (the?) master.

The Diaries of Franz Kafka
by Franz Kafka, translated by Ross Benjamin
PAPERBACK

Ross Benjamin, translator of this new edition says:

“Franz Kafka’s diaries, penned between 1909 and 1923, reveal the relentless self-examination and literary experimentation of one of modern literature’s most visionary figures. My translation gives English-speaking readers access to the complete, unexpurgated diaries for the first time. The only previous English version, first published in 1948-49, was based on a bowdlerized German edition prepared by Kafka’s intimate friend and literary executor, Max Brod, whose extensive cuts and alterations drastically misrepresented the original text.

With his heavy-handed editorial interventions Brod sanitized and sanctified Kafka, censoring accounts of brothel visits, deleting homoerotic passages, and downplaying elements that might complicate the myth of Kafka as a pure, saintly martyr to literature. My translation is based on the 1990 German critical edition, a faithful transcription of Kafka’s handwritten notebooks. Unlike Brod, who minimized the fragmentary, unpolished nature of Kafka’s diary writing and effaced its peculiarities and unorthodoxies, this edition presents the text in all its untidiness.

Kafka’s diaries display his erratic genius, moving in fits and starts, taking stabs in the dark, backtracking and reworking, and leaping from one mode of writing to another, often blurring the lines between them. The pages are strewn with errors, misspellings, repetitions, abbreviations, contractions, regionalisms, and other quirks and infelicities. By preserving these rough edges and idiosyncrasies in my translation, I’ve sought to capture the provisionality and open-endedness of Kafka’s writing as he continuously forges, revises, and reimagines his literary idiom and sensibility.”
