👋Hi bearfoot-athletics!

Are you like us and have thought, "Can I train Olympics lifts completely barefoot?"
After all, you can train the Big 3 Squat, Bench, and Deadlift all barefoot…
So what about Olympics lifts?
We posed this question to Chris Duffin, and like with most of Chris's answers, it's very nuanced and technical…
But after a few tries (and a few glasses of whiskey), we think we distilled it down enough 🥃
Let’s take a look 👀
The sport-specific nature of catching the low position is not a natural movement with load overhead. Therefore, a heel is recommended for the "sport of weightlifting" but not standard weightlifting, done outside the specific Olympic lifts, like the snatch.
So we can all agree there is nothing natural about lifting your bodyweight above your head in one motion like a snatch!
Chris emphasizes...
"The low catch position of a snatch with weight overhead is not a normal movement and position with loading dynamics our biology was meant to accommodate in nature."
Great, so if you aren't planning on competing in Olympic lifting, you don't really need lifting shoes.
It's not a necessary movement to optimize strength or power in the gym…right, Chris?
“No, it’s not a movement that needs to be practiced or developed to maximize human performance. It is a sport-specific position for the SPORT of Olympic lifting.”
Amazing! So to summarize:
1️⃣ A heel is recommended for competing in "weightlifting," the sport but not necessarily required for lifting weights
2️⃣ You don't need to train the classic Olympics lifts to maximize your strength or power in your other lifts
You can train the Olympic lifts Bearfoot. However, your technique would not be optimal since the movement itself is unnatural…
However, there is no need to train sport-specific Olympics lifts like the snatch unless you plan on competing…
Or something like that 🤓
So what does that mean for you bearfoot-athletics?
Whether or not you want to train the Olympic lifts, Bearfoot entirely depends on your goals.
Here is Chris’s opinion…
"If completing these [Olympic] lifts as a hobby, they can be done with Bearfoot style shoes, particularly the clean and jerk. But there would be some opportunity loss in maximizing sport-specific technique and loads moved."
So you can effectively train the muscles in the movements with a Bearfoot style shoe…
But you lose some of the technique efficiently gained to move the heavier loads.
bearfoot-athletics like we said…it depends!
Personally, we train all our lifts in Bearfoot shoes or just plain barefoot since we aren’t competing in Olympic weightlifting.
So if you want to increase your total for your next competition, it would benefit you to incorporate both Bearfoot shoes and heeled lifting shoes!
