Achaval Ferrer 95pt Quimera

A rich Bordeaux-style blend of “layered flavors, elegance and balance” according to the Wine Spectator’s James Laube, the impressive 95 pt. 2019 Achaval Ferrer Quimera reveals aromatic concentrated dark fruit hinting of earthy spice layered with fine integrated tannins, meticulously crafted by one of Argentina’s top producers and a seriously good bargain for Malbec fans to enjoy often.

Located in the foothills of the Andes near the Mendoza and Tunuyan Rivers, Achaval Ferrer was established as a collaborative effort of Argentinian born Santiago Achaval and Italian born Manuel Ferrer, Tiziano Siviero and renowned winemaker and consultant Roberto Cipresso, producing Malbec-based reds that have consistently garnered 90 plus point scores over the last three decades and earned multiple spots on the Wine Spectator’s Top 100. Named for the mythical creature (pronounced “key-mare-ah”) made up of the parts of different animals, the 2019 Quimera was sourced from ungrafted old vines from three distinctly different estate vineyards across the province of Mendoza at altitudes ranging from 700 to 1,200 meters, the diverse soils and altitudes of the low yielding parcels reflected in the layered complexity of the blend. Combining mostly Malbec with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, winemaker Gustavo Rearte aged the elegant 2019 Achaval Ferrer Quimera in a mix of about half new French oak barrels for 15 months with extended time in bottle, yielding a beautifully textured wine with notable intensity and signature vibrant acidity “that makes you long for the next sip” according to the Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutierrez.

From one of the region’s top estates producing Malbecs that rank “among Argentina’s best wines” according to the Wine Spectator’s James Molesworth, the plush and appealing 95 pt. 2019 Achaval Ferrer Quimera is a meticulously crafted expression of the estate’s high altitude, old vine fruit from an exceptional vintage, a balanced and harmonious blend that delivers years of pleasurable drinking at an outstanding value
