“Dandelion Wine” urban sketch by Gavin Snider.

Dear Art Toolkit,

I’ve always been drawn to vast, open landscapes, but over the years, I have grown to embrace the fun of exploring the urban wild. Cities and neighborhoods are full of delights, from soaring architecture to hidden gardens and cozy coffee shops. Carrying a sketchbook invites attention to these details to notice and appreciate the unexpected.

I had so much fun painting with artist Jill Richie yesterday (see our demo recording here) and I’m excited to announce our next live demo with artist and urban sketcher Gavin Snider! Ever since featuring his art and artistic goals in 2022, we’ve looked forward to working with him again. Learn more below, and if you miss the live event, a recording will be available afterward on the Art Toolkit Blog and YouTube

City Sketching Live Demo

A watercolor sketch of a row of brownstone with trees and gaps in the highlights.

Join us online on Wednesday, February 7th, at noon Pacific for a City Sketching live demo with Gavin Snider! In this demo, Gavin will focus on sketching the quintessential
architecture of Brooklyn, specifically the brownstone Gavin will demonstrate how he builds up a watercolor painting from the blank page, “carving out” the painting with increasing levels of detail.

Learn about composition using negative space, applying light and shadow, and approaching architectural and landscape elements in a painting. Bring a sketchbook, some paints, and your favorite brush and get ready to paint along. We hope to see you online for this unique demo with Gavin next week!

About Gavin

Gavin Snider lives and works in Brooklyn, New York, where he paints to slow down the world and draws to better understand the places and people around him. With a background in architecture, much of Gavin’s work focuses on buildings and cityscapes.

A person paints on a portable flat easel with a folio palette.

A few times a week, he picks a location—whether a famous landmark or an unfamiliar neighborhood—packs up a notebook, and goes to paint. In a way, his paintings are a form of urbanism, the study of city life.

Winter Workshops Are in Full Swing

We had a beautiful start to the new year with Anna Brones’ Fostering Creativity workshop at the end of January. Here’s a peek at our time together, and the studio may look familiar! Anna was in Port Townsend for an artist residency and joined me in person to teach.

Up next is Robin Lee Carlson’s Nature Journaling workshop on Saturday, February 10th. This is a fabulous and accessible workshop topic and there are still spots left: register on our website!

Telling stories about the dynamic world around us starts with where we are right now. On the pages of our sketchbooks, we can capture the rich interconnections of place with its unique assemblage of plants and animals, water, rocks and soil. In this workshop, you will learn how to let sketchbook pages evolve organically as we root ourselves in our place.
