Explore rounded brushstrokes with our new filberts!

Dear Art Toolkit,

It’s been a year since we added to our quiver of travel brushes, and we’re excited to announce the arrival of two new filbert brushes: a size 4 and a size 8! Along with them, we have a fun new paper format from our friends at Hahnemühle: tins of Round Watercolor Paper! We’re so happy to share these new (to us) supplies with you, and we look forward to exploring the soft, rounded bristle and paper edges with watercolors! Read on for more!

Rosemary & Co Red Dot Domed Filberts

New round-tipped travel brushes by Rosemary & Co!

Rosemary & Co created travel versions of their beautiful filberts at our request after artist Sushma Hegde’s popular Wildflower Watercolors demo last year featured this unique style of brush. Sushma demonstrated how the flat shape and domed tip of filberts can help create the rounded shapes of flower petals. Below, Sushma sketches a larkspur in blues and purples using a size 8 Domed Filbert.

These brushes can be used on their flat side to create broad strokes with rounded ends. Turn the brush to the thin side to draw fine lines and marks, suggesting subjects like leaves and stems. Filberts create unique “dots” by stamping the tips. Experiment with drawing the brush upwards or downwards, and explore the range of marks you can make!

Both Domed Filberts are made with Red Dot synthetic sable and have the same case diameter and capped length measurements. However, the assembled length of the size 8 is 7" while the size 4 is about a half an inch shorter! Use the size 4 for more precision and control, and explore larger shapes and washes with the size 8. Have fun with it!

Hahnemühle Round Watercolor Paper

Earth Day watercolors on round paper.

We can’t get enough of the fun and dynamic watercolor papers made by Hahnemühle! Last winter, we started carrying their adorable Watercolor Bookmark Pad, and it was such a hit that we were inspired to add more of their unique paper shapes to our selection.

Hahnemühle Round Watercolor Paper is cold-pressed, and 100% cotton with a soft paper feel, perfect for watercolor and gouache paints. Each tin contains 30 loose watercolor sheets (300gsm, 13cm diameter) in a natural white color. Hahnemühle Round Watercolor Paper is vegan, acid-free, and age-resistant.

While these tins can fit in the main pocket of an A5 Art Toolkit, we recommend slipping a couple of loose sheets into your daily sketchbook to keep them flat and protected without carrying more weight or bulk than necessary. The protective tin keeps moisture out, so you can always stow it in a bag or backpack alongside your Toolkit if you have the space!

Round paper is perfect for experimenting with a range of designs such as fruit cross-sections, planets, round objects, and abstract scenes. Visit our website or swing by our shop to add Round Watercolor Paper to your paper supply!

Register for Spring Workshops Today!

There’s something special about workshops in springtime: the sun is poking out and warming the air, drying off park benches as if beckoning us outside to sketch the amazing world around us!

At the end of March, we announced our next line-up of online workshops and there are still spots in all four! New York artist Gavin Snider will kick off the series using Brooklyn’s brownstones to teach workshop participants about painting architecture, working on-location in an urban environment, and carving out negative space with watercolors!

Gavin joined Art Toolkit earlier in the year for a live demo covering the same topic (his area of expertise as an architect and artist!), and the positive feedback inspired us to invite him to lead a workshop! Register by tomorrow and join Gavin Snider for Brooklyn Brownstones: Explore Cityscapes in Color this Saturday from 10am–12:30pm Pacific!

Register by Friday at noon and join Gavin Snider for Brooklyn Brownstones: Explore Cityscapes in Color this weekend! See snapshots from our Winter Workshop Series on the Art Toolkit Blog for more inspiration and participant art!

As always, we appreciate your support, enthusiasm, and inspiring ideas. Please keep in touch, and we’d love to hear your news! We always enjoy connecting on Instagram and Facebook, too.

Best wishes,

Maria & the Art Toolkit Team
