Dear art-toolkit,

Our whole team is packing up all sorts of supplies and fun to share at THING festival in Port Townsend! We are looking forward to basking in a weekend of incredible music and creativity. For those unable to join us in person, we’re excited to announce that our live demo series is back this September. We love these monthly opportunities to connect with artists and share inspiration.

Live Demo with Nishant, The Sneaky Artist

Join us on Tuesday, September 5th at noon Pacific for a live demo on YouTube with Nishant Jain, also known as The Sneaky Artist, for some tips on how to start and finish a sketch onsite with limited time and tools.

A hand holds up a black and white sketch of crowd of peple onsite.

Nishant will pull from his experience drawing from observation in public spaces and share techniques to help start and finish drawings quickly. Participants will learn to improve their skills, develop their taste, and build sustainable drawing habits by focusing on the subjects of their interest, even in densely packed urban spaces. We hope to see you there!

About Nishant

Nishant Jain left halfway through a Ph.D. program in Neuroscience to become a writer instead. To better observe his new world as an immigrant in America, he began walking about with a sketchbook. His unique art style has emerged from the urge to draw quickly with minimal supplies and the desire to observe and appreciate urban life.

He has shared his art, ideas, and writing in news media worldwide. Nishant works as an independent artist, writer, and podcaster in Vancouver, BC. Mark your calendars for this demo on September 5th, and remember you can always watch a recording of it on our YouTube channel.

Flower Shadows Prompt

Grey days are common in the Pacific Northwest, so the bright August sun welcomes creative, sunny activities like tracing flower shadows. All you need is a flower or leaf, paper and pen, and a bit of sunshine.

To capture your subject’s shape, simply hold it a few inches off the page and trace its shadow with your pen. Play with composition by holding your subject at different angles, letting it overlap other tracings as you go. Keep it simple as a line drawing, or go in and add splashes of paint to capture the color of your subject.

An open toolkit with an open sketchbook of flower snd grasses with an uncapped brush pen.

We ran across this post from Elise Blaha Cripe on Instagram, and thought it would be fun to try it ourselves our hand at it. We took an Art Toolkit and Pentel Brush Pen out into the yard and found flowers and grasses there. Thank you for the inspiration, Elise!

Highlight: Sketching with You!

Our second Sketch & Stroll event at Fort Worden was a real mid-summer treat!

A sketch of a person demonstrating at an easle in a field with white buildings and trees behind them.

In contrast to the one in May, the skies were bright blue, the wind was calm, and (you guessed it) no misty rain! Thirty folks joined us to explore the park and play with art supplies. We enjoyed sketching the vibrant trunks of madrone trees and classic views of Alexander’s Castle near The Commons. One of our participants even sketched me while I was sharing some tips—so fun!

As always, we appreciate your support, enthusiasm, and inspiring ideas. Please keep in touch, and we’d love to hear your news! We always enjoy connecting on Instagram and Facebook, too.

Best wishes,

Maria & the Art Toolkit Team
