Dear Art Toolkit,

So much of the holiday season for me is about community and taking time to nourish, nurture, and appreciate loved ones. Today, we’re excited to spotlight our Art Toolkit Ambassadors, artist friends of ours carrying our supplies on adventures big and small, and announce our last live demo of the year!

Speaking of live demos, our second-to-last live demo is happening in a few hours! Join us for Metallic Moons with Sophia Trinh at noon Pacific today!

Live Demo Leaf Sketching with Lisa Spangler

We invite you to join us online next Thursday, November 16th at noon Pacific for a Falling for Fall live demo with Lisa Spangler!

A 3x3 grid of photos of vibrant autumn oak and maple leaves with a sketch in the center square.

Lisa will demonstrate how to paint colorful leaves and share color-mixing techniques and tips for quickly painting fall foliage while on your autumn hikes and neighborhood walks! She shares, “I’ve learned so much about watercolor by painting fall leaves! It’s just about the perfect
subject as there are so many imperfections and variations in nature.”

“From glazing to color mixing, there’s a whole universe to explore in one little leaf.” Lisa started working with watercolor a few years ago while recovering
from six surgeries for a torn ACL.

During rehab, she would walk to a pond in her neighborhood, using her Art Toolkit Pocket Palette to do a little sketch as a reward and let her leg recover before making the trek back home. Now, she sketches while hiking and backpacking between adventures in her camper van.

Lisa is on a mission to share the joy of sketching outdoors with everyone she meets! You may have spotted her artwork for the papercraft industry at Target, JoAnn Fabrics, and Michaels. In addition to sharing her art online, Lisa works for a nonprofit land trust dedicated to
preserving prairies in her home state of Texas. We are excited to have
Lisa back for another live demo and can’t wait to see you all there!

Max Romey

An open laptop, tablet, and smartphone show matching screensaver wallpapers of watercolor art.

Max is always creating new things and working on ambitious film projects, from developing digital wallpaper of his vibrant watercolor paintings to pursuing big family history and climate change questions on his quest “Looking for Lu.” This holiday season, he invites you to follow along on his journey, donate if you can, and pick out something fun from his online shop.

Pictured here is the “Portage Glacier Bay” wallpaper from his Looking for Lu Collection. Read “Retracing Grandma Lu’s Steps and Sketches” on the Art Toolkit Blog to learn about the places Max has taken his Art Toolkit!

Art Toolkit Recommends: Panoramas & Vertical Vistas

Panoramas & Vertical Vistas by Mário Linhares is a book full of fun tips for sketching impressive views in landscape and portrait orientations. We met Mário at Sketcher Fest this summer and were drawn to his detailed line work and hatching. Follow along as Mário guides you through translating a great open space into a sketch on a page with insights like, “Move your feet, not your eyes!”

Two hands hold up a book with a sketch of a church in the foreground and a cityscape in the background. Behind the book there is a similar sketch with tubes of paint.

Panoramas & Vertical Vistas includes some urban landscapes so wide you must unfold the pages to see the full panoramic sketches! This book, along with our other reading recommendations, is available in our Bookshop.

As always, we appreciate your support, enthusiasm, and inspiring ideas. Please keep in touch, and we’d love to hear your news! We always enjoy connecting on Instagram and Facebook, too.

Best wishes,

Maria & the Art Toolkit Team
