Dear art-toolkit,
Thank you to everyone who joined our recent Hike and Draw with Nikki Frumkin and me! After a last-minute relocation to Discovery Park to avoid hiking in smokey conditions, we were rewarded with fall colors and a stunning sunset. We’re excited about more in-person meet-ups and hope you can join us in the future!

This is last minute, but you can catch me this morning on Royal Talens’ Creator’s Studio LIVE on Facebook at 10am Pacific today–that’s just about to start! I’ll be having a conversation with Royal Talens’ Art Education Director Jeffrey Olson about our favorite tools and techniques for adventure art. If you can’t make it live, it should be available afterwards as a recording.

NEW Small Mixing Pan

We’re happy to announce the Small Mixing Pan, the newest member of our Mixing Pan family. We now offer Mixing Pans in Small, Large, and XL sizes.

XL Mixing Pan, Large Mixing Pan, and Small Mixing Pans

Measuring only 26mm square, we love the little bit of extra mixing space the Small Mixing Pan brings to our palettes. Our line of Mixing Pans features the same unique white surface for watercolor blending as the lid of our palettes and is made from rust-resistant stainless steel.

It’s a perfect addition to the Demi Palette, pictured on the left! Looking for a way to keep our mixing surfaces clean? Check out this handy video.

What’s your favorite color to mix?

This Week on the Art Toolkit Blog

We had so much fun hosting Julie Beeler in our shop on Saturday; she is so expressive, knowledgeable, and delightful! Creator of the Mushroom Colors Atlas, Julie has documented a brilliant array of colors sourced from mushroom pigments. To learn more, see some up-close photos, and watch a recording of the live event, see our latest blog post.

Expedition Press Poetry Prompt

Goat of my heart, everything in me you eat.

Today marks the last in the series of brief and beautiful lines of poetry from Myrna Keliher’s Expedition Press. All ten prints from the last ten weeks of prompts are available on her website.

We hope you’ve enjoyed meandering through these different lines, and that you’ll be able to bring more poetry into your sketching in the future.

Prompt #10: This week’s poetry prompt comes from writer Anis Mojgani.

What is the “everything” that the goat of your heart eats?

Art Toolkit Reads: Forest Beekeeper and the Treasure of Pushcha

:Emmzs:xmcllk Fe L2 2 T P R g e

If you love mysterious beekeepers, ancient forests, adorable bears, and true stories, Forest Beekeeper and the Treasure of Pushcha will be for you! An old forest beekeeper takes on a young apprentice, but they are interrupted by the new owners of the forest and their evil plan to harvest all of the trees for profit! Based on the true history of the Białowieża Forest in Poland, this charming comic tells a rip-roaring story while giving a historical account that is probably entirely new to you.

Tomasz Samojlik is a brilliant artist and storyteller. He’s also a forest historian with the Białowieża Mammal Institute! Our favorite parts of the book were learning about forest beekeeping and the detailed notes in the back that gives more historical context to the story. Fun, beautiful, educational, and spooky enough for the Halloween season!

You can find Forest Beekeeper and the Treasure of Pushcha and all our other book recommendations in the Art Toolkit Bookshop.
As always, we appreciate your support, enthusiasm, and inspiring ideas. Please keep in touch, and we’d love to hear your news! We always enjoy connecting on Instagram and Facebook, too.

All my best,
