Good afternoon. It’s Wednesday, May 8.
In today's newsletter:
* Lawmakers rejected two allies of Gov. Mike Dunleavy who had been appointed to state boards, during one of the final days of a
legislative session marked by bitter disagreements between the governor and lawmakers on education policy.
* Valerie Nurr’araaluk Davidson, the president and chief executive of the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, “has
transitioned out” of her role after three years, the consortium said.
* A plan to grant special law enforcement powers to Chickaloon tribal police was put on indefinite hold because public safety
officials feared it could lead to altercations between those officers and nontribal members.
For fans of Huy Fong Foods' Sriracha, it may feel like the last shortage of the popular red, garlicky sauce had only just ended,
but the company announced that it will once again halt production. The new shortage is driven by the severe dry spell in Mexico, a
major pepper exporter and the source of the company's chiles, in the latest example of how environmental challenges are affecting
the food supply chain.
Anchorage weather
It's mostly cloudy today with a high near 51 degrees, and rain is likely this afternoon. There's a chance that rain could mix with
snow overnight as the temperature drops into the mid-30s, and scattered rain showers are likely on Thursday. Daytime temperatures
will range from the mid-40s to low 50s over the next few days.
Here’s what else is making headlines in Alaska today.
