AlterNet ALL-ACCESS

Dear Raw Story reader,

Amid the GOP crackdown on public libraries (and ignoring the long list of "predators, abusers, and enablers" in the party), Ron DeSantis announces his run for president. With all that's happening in the world, we're sure you're looking to make a difference. This week, AlterNet ensured you got what you needed to know.

Here's some of the latest reporting made possible by AlterNet All-Access — which you can support for $1, or less than $1 a week.

Supporters like you also fund AlterNet's diverse array of columnists. Here's some of the columns they delivered just this past week.

  • Blindman’s buff: America’s continuing quest to hide torture In the Blindman’s Buff variation of tag, a child designated as “It” is tasked with tapping another child while wearing a blindfold. The sightless child knows the other children, all able to see, are there but is left to stumble around. Think of us, the American public, as that blindfolded child when it comes to our government’s torture program that followed the 9/11 disaster and the launching of the ill-fated war on terror. We’ve been left to search in the dark for what so many of us sensed was there.

  • Capturing carbon with machines is a failure. So why are we subsidizing it? In a comparative study, the scores for natural versus mechanical carbon removal methods were not close: Natural methods won in every category—and by a significant margin. You might expect, therefore, that policymakers would currently be directing all of their support toward natural carbon removal methods. But you’d be wrong. Government policy support in the form of subsidies is being shoveled mostly into mechanical carbon removal.

  • Our times call for managing complexities, not solving problems It’s not every vineyard that would deem the ecological role of ground squirrels as equal in value to high crop yields. But instead of looking at challenges like that of the ground squirrels as problems to be solved—which is the predominant mode of operating just about everywhere you look in today’s largely extractivist, capitalist world—Paicines Ranch is intentionally working to operate under a different mentality: They’ve taken on an intentional mindset of managing complexities rather than solving problems.

  • Republicans want to defund our libraries “Defund the Library” could be the GOP’s new slogan, succinctly encompassing a free-market agenda to destroy public funding of institutions that enlighten and educate, all under the disingenuous banner of “protecting children” instead of going after the police, gun manufacturers, and actual child sexual abusers.
