This summer's photography calendar is packed with fairs and festivals.
Here's our essential guide to the ones-to-watch for 2024. These are
destinations where you can discover your next favourite artist.

Photo Basel
11-16 June

Switzerland's international art fair returns with over 450 artworks. Amongst the 2024 highlights is a display dedicated to expanded photography, as well as Spotlight Africa, which is new for this year. The exhibition features documentary and creative portraiture from the continent and its diaspora; ones-to-watch include Angèle Etoundi Essamba, Derrick Ofosu Boateng and Morgan Otagburuagu.

Gextophoto
6-30 June

Play is the theme of this year's Gextophoto. It's all about the idea of starting up, getting going and raising spirits. 22 artists will be responding to this idea, including Jason Fulford, Masahisa Fukase, Lu Yang, Feng Li, Manuela Lorente and Anna and Bernard Blume. Verónica Fieiras, meanwhile, offers images of people diving as metaphors for "letting imagination fly."

Belfast Photo Festival
6-30 June

Belfast Photo Festival's aim is "to shine a light on the importance of nuance, critical thought, and interpretation." Its theme is Divergence, and it delves into how contemporary photographers are interpreting rapid digitalisation, our climate emergency and the ethical questions surrounding Artificial Intelligence. Richard Mosse is part of this year's programme, best known for his infrared imagery of war zones and deforestation.

Copenhagen Photo Festival
6 - 16 June

New Talent is the lifeblood of Cophenhagen Photo Festival. This year, its programme includes Futures Nordic Talents 2024, a group exhibition of five emerging artists investigating identity, society, memory, migration and myths. There are must-see exhibitions from Boris Mikhailov, Chloé Milos Azzopardi, Elina Brotherus, Roni Horn and Thao Nguyen Phan, celebrating the festival's 15th anniversary.

VOLTA Basel
10 - 16 June

VOLTA Basel powers artistic discovery. It has been part of the annual art fair calendar since 2005, supporting ambitious young galleries to make their mark on the art world. This year, 47 galleries from 24 countries come together to present not only photography but an array of media. The line-up features Tamara Kreisler Gallery, Madrid, which represents Nick Brandt and his affecting underwater portraits.
